Westby winery one of first in U.S. to can wine

New option in local wine: canned

21/07/2017

Only a handful of wineries in the U.S. can wine. There's only one Midwestern winery on the short list: Branches Winery in Westby.

The single-serve cans of Moxie Moscato and Roxie Rose', are now being stocked on store shelves around our area. It's the same wine made at Branches Winery, about two miles outside of Westby, and sold by the bottle or glass in the winery's tasting room.

"They've got a little attitude," said Therese Bergholz, who, along with her husband Gene, owns and operates Branches. "This is real wine, this isn't a 5% spritzer."

The canned wine is made from grapes grown on Branches' 13 acre property, as well as from juices produced in New York and California. "These are two [juices] that are very abundant, they're popular, everybody likes them," said Therese.

In addition to stores carrying the cooler-friendly canned wine, it has also been picked up by many local festivals in time for the summer fest season.
