The public will get its first taste of Fannys Bay whiskey after the distillery launched its first release on Saturday night at the Kingsway Bar.

The increasing craft spirits scene in Tasmania has seen a number of new distilleries cropping up around the state.

The rise of Tasmanian whiskey is well documented, and Fannys Bay was the first of three in Northern Tasmania to open in recent years.

Mathew and Julie Cooper starting construction on their distillery three years ago.

“It’s a bit nerve-racking but we’re excited,” owner and distiller Mr. Cooper said.

“It’s really good whiskey and very unique to Tasmania.

“The distillery is on one side of the road and the sea is on the other side and that has an influence on the water and fermentation.”

Fannys Bay Distillery’s first release included three cask strength varieties – bourbon, port and sherry, and a 46 percent – pinot.
