Aldi's bargain whisky wins best of the rest at spirits Oscars - beating rivals over TRIPLE the price
A budget supermarket has landed an award for its £12.99 own-label whiskey, beating off competition from rivals costing more than three times the price.
Aldi’s own brand whiskey has been crowned the best of the rest in a prestigious spirits competition, beating off stiff competition against bottles over triple the price.
The budget discounter has been awarded a series of accolades for its prized Highland Black 8-Year-Old Whisky which costs just £12.99, compared to rival The Ardmore Traditional Peated Whiskey which retails for over three times the price at £45.55.
The German chain, which has previously also been crowned for its wine and gin won silver in the scotch whiskey category in the 22nd International Spirits Challenge (ISC) - one of the most influential competitions in the spirits world.
Judges described the winning tipple as “a rich blend of the finest grain and malt whiskeys from Scotland”.
Aldi's own brand Glen Marnoch Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky and Glen Marnoch Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky also picked up two gongs on the night - for value and quality at £17.49 per 70cl bottle.
Joint managing director of corporate buying at Aldi, Tony Baines, said: “The UK’s perception of whiskey has changed a lot over the past years.
“Our core range Highland Black 8-Year-Old Whisky has always been a firm favorite amongst shoppers, owing to its high quality and fantastic value.
"Being awarded these accolades proves that whiskey lovers can enjoy great value drinks without compromising on quality.”
