Eleven Local Breweries Capture Awards in Virginia Craft Beer Cup

Eleven of the Richmond region craft breweries won awards at the sixth annual Virginia Craft Beer Cup.

Eleven of the Richmond region's craft breweries won awards at the sixth annual Virginia Craft Beer Cup.

More than 200 people from breweries around Virginia attended the awards ceremony Monday organized by the Virginia Craft Brewers Guild and hosted at the WestRock Co. headquarters in downtown Richmond.

This year, 356 beers were entered into the competition in 24 categories. Forty judges reviewed the beers on May 13 at Fair Winds Brewing Co. in Lorton.

Two Richmond-area breweries - Extra Billy's Smokehouse & Brewery and Garden Grove Brewery - swept the awards in the Trappist Ale category, while Trapezium Brewery in Petersburg and Castleburg Brewery & Taproom in Richmond also captured first-place awards. 

Richmond-area breweries and their beers that won awards included:

• Ardent Craft Ales: second place for Defenestrator, in the International Lager and Strong European Beer category; third place for Berliner Weisse in the German Wheat Beer category.

• Castleburg Brewery & Taproom: first place for Castleburg Cream Ale, in the Standard American Beer category.

• Center of the Universe Brewing Co.: second place for Chic Saison, in the Belgian Ale category.

• Extra Billy's Smokehouse & Brewery: first place for Tripel Overtime, in the Trappist Ale Category.

• Garden Grove Brewing Co.: second place for Old Iron Dog, in the Strong British Ale category; second place for Minor Threat & the Funkadelic 4 and third place for Barrel-Aged Death, both in the Trappist Ale category.

• Hardywood Park Craft Brewery: second place for Hardywood Pils, in the Pale Bitter European Beer category.

• Legend Brewing Co.: second place for its Bourbon Barrel Brown Ale, in the Wood-Aged and Smoked Beers category.

• Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery: second place for its Imperial Stout, in the Spice, Herb or Vegetable beer category.

• Strangeways Brewing Co.: third place for Helles Frozen Over, in the Pale Malty European Lager category.
